The Pup, the Procedure, and the Pebble

Teddy, a large brown Mastiff

Paisley recently came in for a scheduled spay surgery and an evaluation for a possible tail amputation. During her pre-operative exam, Dr. Oelstrom determined that since Paisley’s tail wasn’t causing any issues, the amputation could be safely postponed.

Instead, given Paisley’s deep chest and large size, Dr. Oelstrom recommended a preventative gastropexy. This procedure involves securing the stomach to the abdominal wall to prevent the potentially life-threatening condition, gastric dilatation-volvulus (GDV), commonly known as bloat.

During surgery, Dr. Oelstrom discovered something unexpected: a large, solid mass in Paisley’s abdomen. Further investigation revealed the surprising culprit: a garden rock! Somehow, Paisley had swallowed a sizeable stone without her family noticing.

Fortunately, the rock was successfully removed, and Paisley recovered well from surgery. Her mom reports she’s back to her happy, healthy self.

Here’s hoping she sticks to dog treats from now on!
