Anicira Receives $25,000 Grant from the ASPCA to Support Pit Fix Spay/Neuter Program

Funding will provide free spay/neuter surgeries for 350 Pit Bulls and Pit Bull mixes in Harrisonburg and Manassas

HARRISONBURG & MANASSAS, VA — Anicira has been awarded a $25,000 grant from the ASPCA® (The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals®) to support its Pit Fix program in Harrisonburg and Manassas. This funding will provide 350 free spay/neuter surgeries for qualifying Pit Bulls and Pit Bull mixes, helping reduce unwanted litters and expand access to essential veterinary care for local families.

The grant will support expenses associated with spay/neuter surgeries, including pre-operative exams, the procedures themselves, and post-operative care. Vaccines and microchipping may be added at the time of surgery for an additional cost. Free spay/neuter surgeries are available by appointment at Anicira’s Harrisonburg and Manassas veterinary hospitals through the end of the year or until all grant funds are allocated. Eligible pet families must reside in Harrisonburg, Rockingham County, Manassas, Manassas Park, or Prince William County.

“We are thrilled to receive this funding from the ASPCA, a highly trusted national leader in animal welfare,” said Mary Golden-Hughes, marketing and communications manager at Anicira. “This grant reflects the importance of programs like Pit Fix that directly support both pets and the people who love them. By removing financial barriers to spay and neuter services, we’re able to prevent future suffering and ensure more pets can live healthier, happier lives in our community.”

“Affordable, accessible spay/neuter services are essential to reducing pet overpopulation and helping keep animals out of shelters — particularly for large-breed dogs, who often have larger litters and remain disproportionately represented in shelter populations,” said Sarah Hess, director of the ASPCA Spay/Neuter Alliance. “The ASPCA is proud to provide Anicira with grant funding to support its critical services to the community and ensure they can continue their lifesaving work.”

Pit Fix is one of Anicira’s longstanding community assistance programs designed to support pet families while addressing pet overpopulation. Last year alone, 281 dogs were spayed or neutered through the Pit Fix program, demonstrating its critical role in improving animal welfare across the community. Along with Anicira’s other affordable and subsidized veterinary care programs, Pit Fix helps ensure that every pet family has access to the care their pets need.
