Anicira’s SpayVA Grant Fully Utilized: 150 Pit Bulls Spayed/Neutered

Anicira was awarded a $10,000 grant from SpayVA, a program of the Virginia Federation of Humane Societies (VFHS), to offer free spay/neuter surgeries for Pit Bull and Pit Bull mix dogs. To expand the reach of this lifesaving initiative, Anicira matched the grant, bringing total funding to $20,000.

The program was extremely successful. Between April and July 2025, 150 pets received free spay/neuter surgeries.

“Anicira was founded 20 years ago as a spay/neuter clinic to address pet homelessness and shelter overcrowding, and these surgeries remain a core principle of our work,” said Mary Golden-Hughes, Anicira’s Marketing and Communications Manager. “This generous grant from SpayVA and VFHS enables us to further expand access to essential veterinary care and support healthier outcomes for Pit Bulls in our community.”

This new initiative builds upon our previous Pit Fix Program, which offers reduced-cost surgeries for Pit Bulls at $40 per dog.
