What Is a COHAT?
We offer a Comprehensive Oral Health Assessment and Treatment (COHAT)—a full-service dental procedure designed to diagnose, treat, and prevent dental disease in dogs and cats.
Each COHAT includes:
- Pre-anesthetic physical exam
- General anesthesia
- IV catheter and fluid therapy
- In-depth anesthetic monitoring (blood pressure, heart rate, oxygen levels, EKG, temperature)
- Full-mouth digital dental X-rays
- Ultrasonic and hand scaling (above and below the gum line)
- Polishing and fluoride treatment
- Complete dental charting
- Extractions (if needed)
- Pain control before and after the procedure
- Patient warming system
- Follow-up exam if necessary
Why Are Dental X-Rays Important?
Many severe dental conditions occur below the gum line. Our digital intraoral X-rays allow us to detect hidden problems, assess the health of roots and surrounding bone, and make informed treatment decisions.
Dental X-rays help detect:
- Periodontal disease
- Tooth fractures and root abscesses
- Retained or broken teeth
- Oral tumors or masses
- Bone infections
- Nasal cavity disease
- Resorptive lesions in cats
- Genetic dental abnormalities
Pre-Anesthetic Blood Work
We recommend pre-anesthetic blood work for all patients, especially those over 5 years old, to ensure your pet is healthy enough for anesthesia. This includes a complete blood count (CBC) and chemistry panel. Blood work can be done on the day of the procedure or during a pre-op visit.
Aftercare: What to Expect
After a dental procedure, your pet may be drowsy and have a tender mouth. You may notice:
- Mild bleeding or blood-tinged saliva (especially after extractions)
- A preference for soft food for a few days
- Drowsiness for up to 24 hours after anesthesia
Our team will provide clear aftercare instructions, and we’re always here if you have questions.
